Reviews - Macross Plus

Macross Plus is now available as a three DVD box set. While the box-set is disappointing, the actual series is still very good. The story is about two old rivals competing to prove their teams military aircraft over the other, at the same time as competing , of course for the love of a beautiful young lady. There are 2 episodes on the first disk and 2 on the second, making the complete chain of all 4. The disappointment comes when you realise that "Macross Plus - The Movie" is actually a version of the series that is "uncut". By "uncut" I mean where they had to drop scenes due to time constraints, rather than nudity, violence and language.
I found myself screaming "THIS IS THE SAME AS THE DAMN SERIES!!!". I was not amused. Normally these deleted scenes were seen as extras on a DVD, rather than tagging them onto the original series and called a movie.
There are a few average trailers and a lame photo gallery, but other than this rubbish, there are virtually no extras. As is common with anime DVDs, the box boasts, "Motion Menus". Crap.

Apart from the packaging being less than truthful about the contents of the "box-set", the show itself is pretty damn good. The action scenes are nicely animated, and fast moving mecha hasn't meant lack of detail on said gadgetry. The story line rocks, and without giving too much away, a main character dies, and for once, you really didn't expect it. The story is cluttered in places but you don't really have to concentrate to keep up.

I got this cheap at HMV, £8.99 in fact. For this price it is a bloomin' bargain and even with it's flaws it is well worth your hard earned cash.
