Reviews - Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
Dr Placebo
Cowboy Bebop is the first movie I ever watched that was subtitled rather than dubbed. When the film started in Japanese and the translations came up in English, my heart sank. I really was looking forward to it and now it was ruined.
However the movie was so good I stayed gripped throughout, even though I had to read what the characters were saying. The story was so gripping that I didn't even notice that I was doing so much reading. A good subtitled film won't bore you, even if you don't enjoy reading and this one lives up to this rule.
The animation was immaculate. Fight scenes flowed perfectly with a gentle style that suited the characters and the feel of the movie. Spectacular flight scenes in small spacecraft were captured beautifully, capturing the aeronautic aerobatics and the sense of speed perfectly.
Scenes showing the cityscape were also impressively panoramic but were not particularly notable.
The characters were drawn well with a style unique to the Cowboy Bebop franchise, featuring pointier noses and lankier legs than normal.
The story revolves around our main man Spike, and his team of bounty hunters, whom you'll be familiar with if you have seen any of the series. Spike and the team uncover a terrorist plot and of course, try to stop it. The plot unfolds slowly at first and speeds up from the middle onwards. This is good because you don't wait to long to know what's going on but at the same time you are not bombarded with too much information at once.
This interesting and quite believable plot makes this, a particularly watch-able anime film.
Humorous elements, a great plot and brilliant fight scenes were all incorporated.
In fact this is one of the best anime movies I've seen in recent years.
Go out and see it.
A great watch.
