Escaflowne - Mecha

Guymelefs
Guymelefs are massive mechanical humanoid robots. Their pilots are encased in a special suit that converts their actions into those of the melef. Guymelefs are powered by energists, glowing gems that are obtained from the hearts of dragons and used as an energy source. The normal versions have the pilot seeing through an opening on the "face" of the melef, wheras more advanced models employ more sophisticated technology. Guymelefs are primarily ground units, although some are capable of flight, but none are airtight enough for the pilot to survive while submerged underwater. Most guymelefs, particiularly the ones owned by important people are custom made. Regular soldiers use normal melefs that don't differ much from each other. They are usually fitted with swords, and are thus optimised for close range combat, which requires more skill on the pilot's part.
Escaflowne
Pilot: Van Fanell
Affiliation: Fanelia / Alliance
Equipment: Sword
Info: Often referred to as the 'white dragon', Escaflowne is an ancient guymelef passed down to each of Fanelia's kings and created by the espano tribe, a mysterious advanced race. Espano guymelefs are able to merge with their pilots, enabling them to control them from the outside. The disadvantage of this is that the pilot 'feel the melef's pain' - All damage inflicted on the melef appears on them as well. If the melef is badly damaged, it must be repaired or the pilot will die. Escaflowne is capable of achieving flight by entering 'dragon mode', where it takes the form of a mechanical dragon, with the pilot holding it's reigns on top. It can also enter a high speed mode in this form, where it's wings retract and two jet boosters appear.
Scherezade
Pilot: Allen
Affiliation: Knights of Kayli / Alliance
Equipment: Sword
Info: Scherezade is Allen's custom built guymelef. Whilst not being anything special - it cannot fly and has no other special abilities, it is respected solely because of the reputatuion it's pilot has as an 'invincible knight'.
Alseides
Pilots: Dilandau, Dragonslayers, Zaibach soldiers
Affiliation: Zaibach
Equipment: Liquid metal, Stealth cloak, flame thrower.
Info: The standard unit of the Zaibach army. Alseides are far more advanced than other melefs. The cockpit is fitted with a scope, which the pilot can use to target enemies at long distance. Their primary weapon is their liquid metal claws on each hand. This metal can be converted into any shape, usually a sword-type, or fired out in 4 long tendrils to penetrate the enemy's armour. These tendrils can also be fired at distant enemies. The liquid metal is also highly flammable, and is used as fuel for the flamethrowers also contained in each arm. The flamethrowers can fire a continuous flame, or launch fireball projectiles. The disadvantage of this flammable metal is theat the melefs can be prone to burning or explosion if damaged, instantly killing the pilot. Like Escaflowne, Alseides can enter a flight mode - their shoulders retract, and their legs bind to give a more aerodynamic shape. The stealth cloaks render them invisible, but these cannot be used in flight. Alseides are fitted with two energists (one on each shoulder) rather than the usual one, giving them more power.

Oreides
Pilots: Dilandau, Jajuka
Affiliation: Zaibach
Equipment: Liquid metal claw, Stealth cloak, flame thrower.
Info: An upgraded version of the Alseides. Only two were seen, the blue one Jajuka's and the red Dilandau's. Both are not much different from the Alseides, other than that they have two energists on each shoulder and more armour surrounding the cockpit. They have the same abilities as the alseides, but are presumably stronger. Both Oreides are trashed by Van in the last episode so little else is known about them.

Teiring
Pilots: Naria, Eriya
Affiliation: Zaibach
Equipment: Liquid metal claw, Stealth cloak
Info: The two Teirings are advanced Zaibach units created solely for Naria and Eriya. Their liquid metal claws are the same as those of the Alseides (see above) with the exception that only 3 tendrils can be fired from each arm, and there is no flamethrower. The Teirings are also capable of flight using their twin boosters, and can achieve high-speed flight by transforming into a plane-like form, where their pointed torso folds over their head. The armour of the teirings is far stronger than that of an Alseides.
