Escaflowne - Episode Synopsis

A description of the 23 episodes
Episode 1: Fateful Confession
Hitomi Kansake is a normal Japanese schoolgirl with an interest in Tarrot cards. She is plagued by visions of a young man in armour and a 'white giant'. One night, whilst out with her friends, the young man from her dreams appears, along with a dragon. The man slays the dragon, and pulls out a glowing object from it's heart. A pillar of light is formed around Hitomi and the man, and they are transported to another world, where the earth and the moon hang in the sky. Wolf-like creatures surround them...
Episode 2: The Girl from the Mystic Moon
The leader of the wolf-men recognises the man, who is called Van, and takes them to Fanelia, Van's home. Van produces an energist (the glowing object from earlier) as proof of his dragon slaying and is prounced as Fanelia's king. Hitomi meets Merle, a cat-girl who seem hostile towards her. Invisible creatures attack Fanelia, and easily beat off their samurai's. Van and Hitomi head into a chamber where a cocoon hangs from the ceiling. Van produces the energist, and says an incantation. The cocoon opens, revealing Escaflowne, a huge white robot, the giant from Hitomi's visions. Van places the energist inside a gem on it's chest, and gets inside. The robot comes to life. Hitomi is able to see the invisible enemies, and tells Van where they are. They are Guymelefs, robots similar to Escaflowne and also seen in Hitomi's dreams. Van battles the enemies, and is aided by Balgus, his swordmaster. Balgus is killed by the enemy. Van leaves the chamber with Hitomi to see Fanelia in flames. Hitomi screams and another pillar of light forms around them ,while the survivors of Fanelia watch in amazement...
Episode 3: The Gallant Swordsman
Van & Hitomi are transported to Asturia, where they meet Allen Shezar - a knight of Kali - and the Moleman, some weirdo. Allen takes van and Hitomi to his fortress, where the other knights reside. He tells Van that Fanelia was destroyed by the invisible enemy. He refuses to let him leave and locks escoflowne in a dungeon. Van steals Escaflowne and tries to escape. He is confronted by Allen in Scherezade. Allen easily beats him, but spares his life. Suddenly, Hitomi has a vision of the destruction of Allen's fortress...
Episode 4: The Diabolical Adonis
Hitomi warns Allen about her vision, but nobody believes her. Allen's men arrive with a prisoner, Merle. She tells Van Fanelia was burned to the ground. Later, Allen tells Hitomi of his past, and how he lost his mother and sister. He trusts her, and puts his men on guard. Sure enough, the invisible enemy arrive. Led by Dilandau in his red Alseides, they destroy the fortess and beat back the knights, just as in Hitomi's vision. Van, Allen, Hitomi & the knights retreat to a canyon and escape on a levi ship. The enemies guymelefs appear, and unexpectedly fly towards them. Van launches escaflowne and it transforms into a flying mechanical dragon. Van uses it as a decoy, and flies away as the enemies follow.
Episode 5: Seal of the Brothers
The enemies follow Escaflowne. They reach land, and revert to humanoid form. Van attempts to fight them, but is beaten. A giant floating fortress appears, and Van is taken prisoner. He meets a strange man. The man shows him his wings and he realises it is his brother, Folken - who betrayed Fanelia. Elsewhere, Hitomi uses her pendant to locate Van. Folken tell Van he was not a traitor, but failed to slay a dragon in order to become king. He tranquilises Van. The levi ship arrives at the fortress, and the crew enter, searching for Van. Allen rescues Van, and they escape. Van runs into Dilandau. Folken hands him his sword, and they do battle. Hitomi warns Van about Dilandau's attacks, and he beats him - slashing his face. The crew escape in their ship, and head to Palas, capital of Asturia.
Episode 6: City of intrigue
The crew arrive at Palas, where they are greeted by Princess Millerna, a friend of Allen's. Allen warns King Aston about Zaibach - the enemies that attacked his fortress - but he has been convinced by Folken to ally with them. In exchange, Zaibach want Escaflowne... Millerna, Van & Hitomi go to market. Zaibach forces are stationed throughout the city. Van sees Folken and heads towards him. Folken asks Van to join him. As they converse, Dilandau secretly targets Van from afar. Hitomi warns Van, and he avoids the shot, thinking it was a trap set by Folken. Asturian forces arrive, requesting Van's audience to the King. He places Escaflowne in an arena with three other melefs. Van defeats them easily, but Allen is suspicious of Aston. He agrees to disguise Escaflowne from Zaibachs forces. Meanwhile, in the heart of Zaibach, Emperor Dornkirk orders his forces to capture Escaflowne "the white dragon"
Episode 7: Unexpected partings
Hitomi discovers Allen & Millerna's romance. After returning to her room, she is kidnaped by Gekko. Merse sees them and tells Van. He launches the disguised Escflowne and tracks them down. Van rescues Hitomi, but his disguise falls off. Dilandau attacks Van, but is stopped by Allen, allowing Van to escape with Hitomi and Merle. Later, they camp in the forest. Hitomi wonders if Allen could be the angel from her visions. Van tells her about his parents, who died when he was young. Allen is locked up by King Aston for attacking Zaibach forces. He is freed by Millerna, and they escape to see Zaibach forces approaching Freid - home of King Aston's grandson, Prince Chid. Allen and the Knights leve for Freid, leaving Millerna behind.
Episode 8: The day the angel flew
Van, Hitomi and Merle find a Zaibach energist mine. Van tries to shut it down, but Hitomi is captured and he is forced to surrender. However, he breaks free, and defeats the captain at the mine. He launches Escaflowne, and it's energist reacts with those in the mine, causing them to explode and split the ground. Hitomi falls into a hole, and Van jumps to save her, revealing his wings. They leave in Escaflowne. Hitomi sees visions of Van's parents, a king of Fanelia and a the winged Vari - a draconian woman. She sees how his father died after Folken left, and his mother dissapeared searching fom him. Meanwhile, in Zaibach, Dornkirk looks into the future, and sees that Escaflowne will affect Zaibach's future if they do not capture it...
Episode 9: The blue eyed Prince
Van, Merle & Hitomi head for Fried. They are attacked by the Dragonslayers' invisble melefs. Hitomi can see them, and shows Van where they are. Allen and the knights arrive. Allen battles Dilandau, whilst Van continues to fight the Dragonslayers. Fried forces arrive with Millerna, and the Dragonslayers retreat, except Miguel, who is captured by Van. Allen has been badly hurt in the battle and is operated on by Millerna. He survives and awakes after they arrive in Freid. He tells Chid that Zaibach are planning to attack Freid. They decide to interrogate Miguel, and summon Plactu, a master hypnotist. Later, Hitomi shows Van how to locate an invisible enemy. Elsewhere, Folken sends Zongi, a doppleganger to Plactu's ship as it approaches Freid. He kills Plactu and assumes his form...

Van decides to aid the alliance in their war against the Zibach empire, leaving Hitomi behind. Folken reveals to Hitomi that he will die soon, and decides to return to Zibach, in order to stop Dornkirk. Hitomi goes with him. They arrive in Zibach, and Dornkirk reveals his plan to them. Folken kills Dornkirk, but dies himself. The Fate Alteration Engine is set in motion, and Dornkirk reappears...
Episode 23: Eternal love
The Zone of Absolute Fortune is activated around the battlefield, and the deepest wishes of all inside are granted. The Zibach soldiers retreat and the alliance soldiers turn against each other. Dilandau joins the battle. Van beats him easily, but Jajuka sacrifices his life to save him. Van strikes at Dilandau again, but is stopped by Allen, who reveals to him that Dilandau is his sister. Van and Allen battle. Hitomi realises the love she has for Van as she watches the fight, and calls him. They stop the battle, and Allen is reunited with Selena. Van reveals his wings, flies to Zibach and rescues Hitomi. Dornkirk's machine is destroyed. Some time afterwards, Fanelia is rebuilt. Hitomi and Van share an embrace, before a pillar of light appears, and Hitomi is returned to Earth...
