Shinji Ikari He is the main character in Neon Genesis Evangelion. He was the third child (the Third Qualifier), and was designated pilot of Eva-01. He is a very emotionally stressed person who has no self-confidence. He also has a very hard time expressing his feelings because he fears having them hurt by others. He has a bad relationship with his father who is called Gendou Ikari, and his mother passed away when he was still a kid. He met Misato Katsuragi at Tokyo-3, who becomes his roommate and guides and looks after him. |

Rei Ayanami She was the first child to be designated as a pilot. She pilots Eva-00. She had been training since the early stages of NERV. She is very close to Gendou, Shinji's father and trusts him very much. Unlike most young girls, she doesn't often speak and doesn't show her feeling to others. She also avoids contact with people and has trouble keeping relationships. Only when she's with Gendou does she act normally and express herself. The only other person Rei is close to is Shinji. She shows a maternal sort of concern for him. Rei is part human part Angel, made from both the DNA of Yui Ikari (Shinji's mother) and of Lilith, and an easily replaced clone. She is aware of this, so she sees herself as expendable and insignificant. In some cases, she even wishes for death. |

Asuka Langley Soryu The second child designated as the pilot of Eva-02 She is 75% German and 25% Japanese and was born and raised in America. She has an incredible amount of pride and therefore does not want to lose to anybody in anything. She has high confidence in her self and her skills as a pilot and she likes to show off. Unlike Shinji and Rei, she has an outgoing personality. Although she is only fourteen, she has already graduated from college. Even though she quarrels a lot with Shinji, she seems to be always with him and shows a little concern over him. Her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Sourly, became insane after a synchronization accident with Eva-02, and believes that a certain doll is her child. This is the reason why Asuka hates dolls and those who "act" like dolls (e.g. Rei). The day that Asuka was announced as the second child, her mother hung herself in front of her. |

Misato Katsuragi A cheery and outgoing woman, determined but sometimes immature. Although she may act this way, she must never be underestimated for she takes her work very seriously. She is Shinji's immediate superior. She is also acting guardian over Shinji and Asuka. She hates the Angels and is determined to have her revenge against them for causing the death of her father. The event was very distressing for her. Her father gave up his life in order for her to escape. She was unable to speak for two years. |

Dr. Ritsuko Akagi |

Kaji Ryoji He works for Special Investigation Department of NERV and also, as "part time," Department of Interior of Japan. He is a friend of Ritsuko & Misato from their college days. He works for NERV but is actually a spy for the Japaneese government who want him to investigate NERV. Both Ritsuko and Misato fall in love with him. Kaji takes this chance to find out secrets form these two important NERV staff. He is eventually discovered and killed. |
